WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — A tribal judge has found the wife of a Navajo Nation official to be in contempt of court after she refused to answer questions about a discretionary fund case.
The Daily Times reports that prosecutors say Navajo Nation Council Delegate Mel R. Begay misused money from a slush fund designed to help tribal members facing extreme financial hardship.
His wife, Mitzie Begay, has repeatedly refused to be interviewed. She has invoked a privilege that prevents married couples from being forced to testify against one another in certain cases.
Attorney Marc Lowry told the judge he wanted to ask Mitzie Begay questions that would not violate spousal privilege.
Mitzie Begay was taken to jail in Window Rock, Arizona, on Monday evening.
