Located near a street called Treat Avenue, a new Tucson burger joint couldn’t sit in a more appropriate location. On Friday, April 1, Tucson residents flocked to the grand opening of Blake’s Lotaburger at Speedway Boulevard and Treat Avenue to get a taste of what New Mexicans crave.

The grand opening was met with lengthy, hour-long waits around the building and little to no immediate parking available. That did not, however, stop hundreds of hungry customers from lining up to get a bite of the famous green chile cheeseburgers and other offerings. That enthusiasm did not die as the day waned on.

People took to social media to cover their experiences, all of which expressed excitement over the restaurant’s opening and satisfaction of their meals.

That social media presence also happens to be part of the reason Blake’s opted to open a Tucson location in the first place. The Albuquerque-based chain found that while monitoring comments and mentions in various social media accounts, they noticed that Tucson was one the cities that expressed the biggest desire for a local presence.

Due to the large following and support, a second Tucson location is set to open later this year at Valencia Road and Midvale Park Road. However, an official opening date has not been confirmed nor has plans to expand outside of Tucson into Phoenix or other Arizona cities.

Touted as offering the world’s best green chile cheeseburger, a title both self-proclaimed and bestowed by entities like National Geographic, Blake’s Lotaburger has become a New Mexico institution in its 63 years of operation. According to the company’s website, the green chile idea stemmed from witnessing customers bring in their own green chile to top their burgers. Other menu options include breakfast burritos, hot dogs, and frito pies.
