Nicco a member of the largest Native American tribe in the world become the first UFC Flyweight Champion defeating Roxanne Modafferi.
Navajo Nation, President Russell Begaye and Vice President Jonathan Nez congratulate her and are proud of her for representing Navajo in a statement released the OPVP.
According to the news release, tomorrow, on Dec. 3, there will be a parade held Montaño’s honor at noon in her hometown of Lukachukai, Arizona.
In a post-fight interview Montaño said that she wants to return to Chinle, Tsaile and Lukachukai to remind all the kids that despite hardship “we know how to live off the land, we know how to use the necessities of everything and not just take everything for granted.”
She added that she wants to remind youth that “you don’t need things.”
President Begaye said that Montaño is an inspiration for Navajo youth.
Vice President Nez applauded her for being a role model.
“Nicco Montaño demonstrates that there is great talent on the Navajo Nation,” Vice President Jonathan Nez said. “There are many of our young people out there looking up to her and are reminded that they can reach their full potential.”
“We are strong, resilient people,” he added. “I appreciate Montaño for promoting that message and our way of life teachings.”
Nicco Montaño’s overnight success is due to years of dedication and training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and stand-up fighting.
