WINDOW ROCK – The Navajo Nation Council is scheduled to convene in a special session at 3:00 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the Council Chamber in Window Rock, to consider Legislation No. 0393-16, which seeks to amend the Navajo Nation’s fiscal year 2017 Comprehensive Budget.
“The Council welcomes all Diné Citizens to attend Thursday’s special session as we address budget items that are very important for the Navajo people and our communities,” stated Speaker LoRenzo Bates (Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, Tiis Tsoh Sikaad, Tse’Daa’Kaan, Upper Fruitland).
The legislation sponsored by Council Delegate Seth Damon (Bááháálí, Chichiltah, Manuelito, Tsé Lichíí’, Rock Springs, Tsayatoh), requests the approval of approximately $7.8 million in unallocated funding to be included in the Comprehensive Budget.
Among the budget items included in the $7.8 million is approximately $935,000 for the 110 chapters, $1.3 million to restore working hours for Navajo Area Agency on Aging employees, $689,000 for the Judicial Branch, $847,000 for district grazing officials, $118,000 for the Department of Diné Education, and $350,000 for criminal investigations under the Division of Public Safety.
The Budget and Finance Committee also considered the legislation on Tuesday, and issued a “do pass” recommendation with two amendments with a vote of 2-1.
Prior to the special session, the Naabik’iyátí’ Committee is scheduled to meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chamber on Nov. 17.
