Navajo Nation Council mourns the passing of Honorable Steven Begay


NASCHITTI, N.M. –
 On Thursday, the Navajo Nation Office of the Speaker learned of the passing of Council Delegate Steven Begay, who represented the communities of Naschitti, Coyote Canyon, Mexican Springs, Tohatchi, and Bahastl’a’a’.

Honorable Begay, 43, is originally from the community of Nashchitti, and resided there with his wife and two children. His clans are Tł’ááshchí’í born for Áshįįhí, his maternal grandfather is Tódích’íi’nii, and his paternal grandfather is Dólii Dine’é Táchii’nii.

Speaker for the 23rdNavajo Nation Council LoRenzo Bates (Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, T’iis Tsoh Sikaad, Tse’Daa’Kaan, Upper Fruitland), expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Honorable Steven Begay, and stated he was very sad to learn of the passing of his colleague.

“On behalf of Council, I want to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Honorable Begay, and we send our prayers to them with great love and support during their time of need. Additionally, Council members are mourning the loss of our dearest friend and colleague, and we are still processing how we will move forward during this difficult time. We ask that the public please respect the privacy of the Begay family,” stated Speaker Bates.

Speaker Bates said there is no information regarding Delegate Begay’s death at this time, and will wait until the investigation has been completed before releasing any other information.
