On Sunday, April 17, a Chinle woman and her children were killed by her estranged husband in Lake Mary, Fla. The husband later committed suicide.
The woman, identified as 31-year-old Chericia Brown from Chinle, was stabbed by her husband, 30-year-old Henry Brown, in a Chili’s parking lot. Two witnesses attempted to assist Chericia but the three were run over by Henry as he fled the scene. Chericia was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Henry Brown then picked up the couple’s two children, ages 4 and 1, from a babysitter and drove to a hospital in an attempt to find Chericia. Police confronted Henry, who exchanged gunfire with police at the hospital. He killed his children and committed suicide shortly after the confrontation.
According to Florida news outlets, the couple had a history of domestic violence that had a paper trail to December 2015. A police report from a domestic violence incident that month stated that Chericia contacted police after her husband physically attacked her and made a death threat.
However, police did not make an arrest, citing a lack of evidence and inconsistent statements from Chericia and Henry. They also wrote that since Chericia moved out of the home “the fear of further violence does not exist.”
Chericia filed a domestic violence injunction against Henry several days later to prevent him from contacting her. While the injunction was granted, prosecutors did not file charges against Henry, also citing a lack of evidence.
A GoFundMe account was set up to transport Chericia and her children to Farmington, N.M. for burial. Donations can be made by visiting gofundme.com/funeralforall3.
